A gum tree -

The old bark,

Now brown and cracked

Was falling away

And was revealing

Dresden china-like

Grey-blue-pink

Of the new bark

Underneath.

For a long time

The old bark

Had nurtured the life of the new -

Now that its work was nearly done

The old bark's new life

Had already begun.
