Edmund Rice Centre WA
Common Goal is a soccer academy that operates in Mirrabooka and Cannington in Perth WA. It is a large program and part of our Youth Services at the Edmund Rice Centre WA. It runs every week in partnership with communities of local mosques, WA Police and Football West. Local police officers visit regularly to engage with the children and youth and we regularly play against local clubs, schools and associations. The program also offers participants pathways to youth leadership, development, education and employment opportunities.
In February 2018, we organised the Common Goal World Cup which attracted a variety of teams from different cultural backgrounds and the Police Department participated and fielded a team. Common Goal Academy fielded two teams. Both teams wore Australian colours (Gold and Green). Also we had teams representing the South Sudanese, Syrian and Congo communities. In the first round, “Australia Gold” defeated WA Police while “Australia Green” was defeated by Syria. “Australia Gold” went on to play semi-finals but at the end of the day Afghanistan won the Common Goal World Cup against Congo.
It was a great day and an amazing gathering of different cultures and backgrounds in one place and thanks to Ballajura AFC, Football West, WA Police and Al-Taqwa Mosque for the support.
